Decorating With Dots

Even if you’re dreading the first day of school, you have to admit that a new school year can have a great deal of potential. Seeing old friends, making new ones, meeting new teachers, learning new things, getting new books, and sporting a few new clothes are all reasons to get excited about the new school year ahead.

One of the best things about fall is getting fresh, new pencils and paper and notebooks and whatever else is on your back-to-school shopping list. While you might not get to choose exactly what you want (parents can be pretty strict with the whole budget thing), you can always add a little flair to your plain, boring notebooks before the big day appears.

Doodle Dots bookWe’ve recently been fascinated with pencil eraser stamping. So much so that we’ve devoted an entire book to it!

It’s called Doodle Dots and we think it’s totally terrific. It comes with a double-eraser-ended “pencil” and a colorful ink pad that you can use to stamp random designs, or flowers, or rainbows, or caterpillars, or whatever creative dot-stamping your imagination can come up with.

Go DOT Wild!

Beyond the book, think of all the fun you could have decorating your notebooks or paper-bag book covers.

You know math class would be so much more enjoyable if your notebook looked like this. You could decorate folders, binders, notebooks, and book cover. Make it all match, create a picture that’s perfect for the subject, or just randomly dot up the entire cover!

The Art of Dots – Pointillism!

Creating a picture using small dots of color is nothing new. Pointillism is a style of painting in which a picture is formed entirely from small dots of color.

The most famous Pointillism painting is A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by George Seurat. (You can click on the painting to see a larger view and notice the individual dots!)

In real life, that painting is actually huge (about feet tall and 10 feet wide) and every square inch of it was painted with small, pure dots of color. It took Seurat over 2 years to complete and it is now on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Can you imagine working on a single picture for over 2 years?

Happy Dot-Decorating!

What can YOU do with an eraser and some ink?
